What makes creating a position paper different from creating an informative review is stance. In an informative review, you have to remain as neutral as possible while informing your audience on a given topic. On a position paper, I was required to take a stance and justify why my claim was the more preferable claim over the counter argument. In an informative review, it was more helpful to use narratives and story telling to provide a compelling experience for the reader to relate to. The position paper included more arguments and claims that attempt to convince the reader to agree with these claims or arguments. The primary audience for the position paper was for politicians and residents of New York. These will be the people who can help make the change and will be the ones dealing with the change. The exigence of the paper’s topic is the destructive power that offshore drilling has on the planet. It contributes to global warming and endangers the lives of those who partake in offshore drilling on the job. One of my counter arguments that I expressed was that offshore drilling is great for economical reasons and provides mass amounts of revenue that makes it so commonly used. My strategy for including the counter argument was to first, address my argument. Then, addressed what critics would say about my claim, and explain why the argument is invalid. I acquired my sources by using the website provided, but I chose the ones I used because they were the featured arguments, and they supported the arguments I wanted to educate the reader on. These sources provided facts about several energy sources that anyone who would take a stance should know. To find the motivating issues in the scholarly sources, I first referred to the titles of the sources I used. Most of the sources I used had indicated what their stance was in the titles. That way, I know what kind of information I can look for once I begin reading. After the title, most of the sources had subheadings that divided information and made it easy to find. The information found in most abundance was most times the motivating issue of the source. The collaborative and social aspects helped me with writing my paper because I am able to understand my writing from another perspective. When I allow someone else to read my work in a peer review, they find ways for me to make my work better and find whats wrong with it. It feels as though my work is being graded but I get the second try I need to solidify the final piece. Peer review is a great strategy for producing the best work, and it makes me feel more confident in my work when I clear mistakes that someone else has found for me. I used the online gale database to find my sources. The website has a great selection of well sorted information of all types. I had the option to find several types of work on different topics that made it easy to pick something to support my argument. To best support my answer to what the exigence of my paper’s topic, I chose this piece of evidence:
“In New York, people live among one of the most densely populated states. Despite this fact, New Yorkers are challenged with low access to sustainable energy sources and as a result they reside in one of the most polluted states as well.”This topic sentence well depicts what the issue is regarding the energy crisis, and why it is urgent for New York to switch to cleaner energy sources.”
